How language can help improve your career

What if you could create a reality just by saying it’s there in front of you? A new study by cognitive scientist Gary Lupyan, has shown how language can in fact shape or even build a reality.

In the tests conducted for this study, participants were asked to see with one eye a sequence of objects, a kangaroo, a pumpkin and so on, while on the other eye they would see visual noise. On certain occasions the visual image would be matched by the same word being said by the scientists.

The results showed that when language interfered, the person was more likely to say they actually saw the object being heard, in contrast when the word heard was not matching the object or no word was said at all.

What this means is that language builds up reality. Through language we can shape our perception of the world. Language interferes without our vision and how we choose to process and experience the visual world.

As a result, language proves to be a potent tool in creating a reality that promotes our growth.

This study has a lot of ramifications for your career and other aspects of life. It suggests that by believing and articulating your success and positive development you’re at one level making it happen already.

Pep-talk

Eliminate negative self-talk. Mistakes are bound to be made, don’t discourage yourself by reminding it of your weaknesses or failures.

Choose instead to focus on whatevever you’ve achieved already and how this can help you achieve even more, a promotion, a raise, starting your own business.

Positive self-talk will help you establish a parallel reality where the potential, the tools and resources are at hand already.

Positive self-directed talk helps you believe in your abilities and make your goals or dreams become for once  easy to accomplish.

Say YES and CAN instead of the so-easily-coming-out-of-your-mouth, NO and CAN’T. These positive affirmations let your brain perceive possibility and the need for action. Anything you say that includes the words NO and CAN’T immediately shuts off your will to try and succeed.
