With increasing awareness about women health, more and more people are coming out from behind the closed doors. They are now more open about discussing women health issues and treatment. People are coming forward to take up matters in their own hand. Talking about women health issues, today I am going to share my own story.

When I was in my school’s final year, during mid-session I started having irregular menses. I was taken to a doctor. She asked me to take some medical tests. The reports were delivered. She observed my reports and started my treatment. When my mother asked the doctor what was the problem? In reply the thing we got to hear shattered my parents totally. She talked about abnormal AMH levels.

I came back and started reading on it being a biology enthusiast.

Well, many of you would wonder what is it? If you are at a loss, here it is.

AMH- Anti-Mullerian Hormone. It is the hormone that indicates the fertility level of women, precisely the functioning of the ovary. It is predetermined when the female foetus is developing inside the womb. Once formed inside the foetus, this hormone’s quantity remain constant throughout a woman’s life. It also indicates the number of eggs or ovum that were formed in the ovary, which is also constant- 400 matured ovum are formed on an average.

According to the reports, my AMH level was below normal and indicated- poor fertility. It was on a dangerous edge and could further slip below the limit and can cause infertility. I would be left barren and my menses would stop- menopause may occur before 30. Menopause means the start of the physical aging process in women. The doctor suspected that either it was due to the effect of wrong medication- which is curable, or unfortunately if I was born with less number of the ovum, then it can’t be cured. If the case is later one, then I would have to undergo treatments to keep the ovum preserved if I want to have a child later on. Or else if nothing works, I have to settle for a marriage within 22 years of age.

It was a turbulent phase for me and my parents. With my board exams nearing and just the start of career round the corner, I totally wanted to concentrate and focus on my career. But at times, those words haunted me. My parents started consulting other doctors and undergo several tests. Some assured that surely I don’t have a problem and others put up a grave expression. It was just horrible. One day- my father unable to bear the grief anymore, burst out. I consoled him, tried cheering him up. I tried to grab his attention to that I have appeared for my board exams successfully, the entrance exams went well. But all in vain, he just repeated one thing- if you don’t have health, then you lose wealth.

It was too frustrating. It is also a social taboo of female infertility.

I went back to my gynaecologist. I told her that it was just the beginning of my career building process. How could I think of marriage and child, etc at that point of time? It isn’t any joke. I requested her to do anything that is possible to prevent that. She said that she is putting me on medication and that she will keep a regular eye on my health progress through AMH test reports.

The medication she provided was to keep the rest of the ovum in a good condition so that it can be sustained for some time till I am ready to take the responsibility within the age of 30. Assured of this, I convinced my parents that all will be well and need not worry. I am pursuing my higher studies now, though always I know in the back of mind that my biological clock is ticking away. But who cares?
