Getting Ahead When Others Get Tanned

You could do the same thing you do every summer (pretty much nothing), or you could take advantage of it as a shrewd businessman would normally do. So what’s going to be?

Most people regard summer as the season of idleness and fun. There’s nothing wrong with that— if you’re a successful, settled CEO, that is. However, for the struggling students, graduates  and those laid-off, summer is a different story.

Why let three good months go to waste, when you could fully exploit it? Summer is a hard-to-miss opportunity, with plenty of activities you could engage in that can improve your employability and enrich your resume.

Internships

This summer fill your pockets up, instead of emptying them out

Summer internships, whether paid or not, are a good way to make this summer count. Don’t settle for a mediocre internship placement. Do some research and find one that will actually be beneficial, both in financial and educational terms.

If you’re going to invest your summer time in an internship it should be a worthy one. Are you an aspiring TV producer? Look for creative summer camps where you can develop your skills and talents through a kids play or mini film.

Volunteering

If  making money is not your primary goal this summer, volunteering is always a valid choice. In fact, volunteering is an apt excuse for getting into a business otherwise impenetrable through job placements.

Play it smart and you might as well receive an internship proposition! Plus, showing how charitable and socially sensitive you are will always gain you extra points. Not to mention how more interesting it will make you in that girl’s eyes.

Seminars and Programs

If you cannot find an internship or part-time job, relevant to your skills and aspirations, you can always look into ways that you can expand or deepen your existing qualifications. Summer camps and educational programs abound. Especially if you got the budget, there are plenty of educational programs abroad that can guarantee a pleasant, enlightening summertime experience.

Such career oriented programs give you the opportunity to experiment with business fields you are interested in as well as give a try to career opportunities you prematurely rejected. It’s all about experimenting and being open-minded.

If still you cannot be bothered to spend a summer working when friends will by partying, there’s always an alternative. Turning a hobby into a source of income, do what you’re passionate about into a lucrative summer activity. If you like swimming for example, get certified training and spend the summer working at a waterpark as a lifeguard.

Summer it’s a great opportunity for sharpening your skills and gaining work experience. You might sacrifice summer fun, but you will be overcompensated come fall!
