This is one of the most widely misunderstood parts of the female anatomy. We are talking about the cherry or what we call as our hymen which is supposedly a ‘film’ covering our vagina. Let’s talk about something important, you know that thing you have grown up hearing that how your hymen breaks when you have sex for the first time and how it pains, well, it turns out that this is totally not the case.

Here are some eye-opening facts about hymen that you must know!

1. Hymen breaks itself as you age

It is a very thin tissue and withers away with the age due to athletics or self-exploration, cleansing and even activities as simple as walking. A very small part of that tissue may remain at the opening of the vagina.

2. Pain from first-time sex is not because of hymen breaking

Yes, the age-old concept of having painful first-time sex is baseless and is false. Actually, the pain occurs because of lack of proper lubrication or for the lack of arousal in the woman. If the woman is properly aroused, then there won’t be any pain.
The first time is painful because both are inexperienced and explore things, the anxiousness built over days before doing it is also the cause of pain.

3. Blood stained sheets are not the proof of losing virginity

Young partners are inexperienced so the first time is less sensual and more like a trial and error thing. So a poorly lubricated vagina or rough sex can cause sensitive vaginal tissue to bleed, but not hymenal tissue to break.

4. A little surgery can solve all the problem

About 1 in 200 women have an “imperforate” hymen. It means that they do not have an opening wide enough to allow the tampons or the erections to enter comfortably. Opting for a simple surgery can solve the issue as they snip away some part of the membrane to make the opening wider.

5. Historical concept of looking for bloodied sheets after sex made people go through lengths for proving their virginity.

People in olden times had to go to lengths to prove their virginity. If a girl didn’t bleed than a small cut at the inner thighs was made to make people believe in her virtue. A little too nosey, don’t you think?
