Irom Sharmila, popularly known as the Iron Lady, has been fasting from last 16 years. She was on a hunger strike in Manipur demanding repeal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
While addressing the media, she said, “I will break my fast as the government has failed to give any positive response… I will fight elections to resolve the issues.”
Irom has been force-fed from last 16 years through a nasal tube. She started her fight against the oppression when she was merely 28 years old. According to media reports she might end her fast on 9th Aug. Activists who are associated with her cause said her decision would mark a new beginning in the fight against AFSPA in the state.
She also informed the court – where she is required to mark attendance every 15 days – that she wants to marry.
