On Sunday, when the main market in Daryaganj is closed, the beautiful bookstores set themselves up. It becomes the venue of the largest and the longest book market in the world. There you can find roadside stalls selling all sorts of books you can possibly imagine which includes, novels, encyclopedias, dictionaries, out-of-print books, kids’ books, guidebooks, coffee-table books, quiz books, pulp fiction, academic, journals, magazines, and everything that you would want to read. It’s literally a mile-long treasury of book which runs from Delhi Gate to Subhash Park red light where the Daryaganj’s central road ends. The books on offer in the Daryaganj Sunday book market are mostly second-hand and can be a little (or a lot) dusty at times but chances are that you might just end up finding your hands on the volumes you won’t find in the posh bookstores in India. The ambience of the ‘Old World’ charm lurks in the background as the Sunday in Daryaganj gets abuzz with people of different ages and backgrounds frantically fiddling through the piles of books in a bid to find what they’re looking for. The Sunday Book Bazaar of Daryaganj has for long been giving the posh bookstores in flashy malls and markets a run for their money. The market is now in its 49th year and was set up to cater to the ever-growing demand for books in the city. Here you will never fail to find the titles which you cannot get in malls and flashy stores and even if you can they will give you the run for your money so you have to switch today!
